Botox vs Dysport

Botox and Dysport are both injectable neuromodulators that work by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for causing dynamic wrinkles and fine lines. Dynamic wrinkles are those that form as a result of repetitive facial movements, such as frowning, squinting, or smiling. By targeting these muscles, Botox and Dysport can smooth out existing wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming, giving you a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) are derived from botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that has been safely used in cosmetic treatments for decades. While they are similar in their mechanism of action, there are some differences between the two products.

One of the primary differences lies in their formulation and the size of the molecules. Dysport has smaller molecules compared to Botox, which allows it to spread more easily and cover a larger area once injected. This characteristic can make Dysport an excellent choice for treating larger areas, such as the forehead or the area between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). On the other hand, Botox’s larger molecules result in a more localized effect, which can be beneficial for targeting smaller, specific areas like crow’s feet around the eyes or fine lines around the mouth.

The onset of results is another factor to consider. Dysport tends to show results more quickly, often within 2-3 days after treatment, while Botox might take 3-7 days to see the full effect. This faster onset can be appealing to those who are looking for quicker improvements in their appearance. However, both treatments generally last for about 3-4 months, requiring regular maintenance sessions to sustain the results.

Benefits

There are numerous benefits to choosing Botox and Dysport treatments at True Aesthetics. Botox and Dysport treatments are non-invasive, meaning there is no need for surgery or extensive downtime. You can achieve noticeable results with minimal disruption to your daily life. The procedure is quick, typically taking only 15 to 30 minutes, making it easy to fit into your busy schedule. Many clients choose to have their treatments done during a lunch break or after work.

When administered by our skilled professionals, Botox and Dysport provide natural-looking results that enhance your appearance without making you look “frozen” or overdone. These treatments are also versatile enough to be able to treat a variety of concerns, including forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, and more. They can also be used for medical purposes, such as reducing excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and alleviating chronic migraines.

Regular treatments can help prevent the formation of new wrinkles, making Botox and Dysport an excellent choice for clients who want to maintain a youthful appearance over time.

Results and Aftercare

You will start to notice the effects of Botox or Dysport within a few days, with full results becoming visible within one to two weeks. The treated areas will appear smoother and more youthful, with a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The results typically last three to four months, after which follow-up treatments are recommended to maintain your refreshed look.

To ensure the best results, we advise avoiding strenuous exercise, excessive sun exposure, and lying down for at least four hours after your treatment. Additionally, it’s important to follow any specific aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prepare for my treatment?
Avoid blood thinners such as alcohol, aspirin productions, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, high dose garlic, ginseng, gingko and/or other herbal supplements up to 3 days before treatment. Discontinue retinol 48 hours prior. Plan for your aftercare instructions; following your treatment, you agree to stay upright for 4 hours after your treatment to prevent migration of the product to another muscle area. Avoid activities that will make your face flush x 24h (hot tubs, saunas, vigorous exercise). You should consider your bedtime (ensuring you’re upright) and your activities when choosing your appointment time. Please avoid any facial treatments (Hydrafacial, microneedling, etc) or procedures that will put pressure on your face for a minimum of 7 days post Botox.
The treatment involves using small injections of the neuromodulator (Botox or Dysport) to target specific muscle groups. Your initial treatment will take about 45 mins with your injector, for them to provide your medical assessment and create a personalized treatment plan for you. These injections cause a temporary reduction in the strength of muscle contraction. This effect may start to occur in 2-4 days after injection and full results within 14 days. The goal of treatment is to soften the muscle contraction and not to eliminate the movement completely. A typical Botox or Dysport treatment will last 3-5months, depending on dosage and individual factors. For long-term results – consistency is key. To prevent line formation, or to maintain your results, keeping a consistent routine will deliver results that will benefit you into future years.
A typical treatment can have very mild discomfort.

Your injector can provide you with distraction techniques numbing, and other methods to facilitate your comfort.

Needle phobic?  You’re not alone.  Let us know so that we can prepare to treat you with comfort and consideration.
Recovery time is minimal; you may have small red marks at your sites, which typically resolves within an hour. You may experience mild bruising. The antiseptic may cause temporary dryness to the skin so we recommend skipping your retinol 48 hours prior to injections and being generous with your moisturizer. Some individuals will experience a mild headache on the day of treatment – we recommend staying well hydrated and taking Tylenol if needed. Aftercare is integral to obtaining good results and to reduce risk of poor outcomes. It takes 4-6h for Botox and Dypsort to be carried into the nerve ending – in this time frame it can be vulnerable. After injection, you must stay in an upright position for 4 hours to prevent migration of the product to another muscle. Do not massage, rub, put pressure on or manipulate the area for 4 hours after injection. This also includes no hats with tight brims or facial treatments for 4 hours post as well as no activities that will make your face flush for 24h – no hot tubs, saunas, alcohol or vigorous exercise.
You’ll typically start seeing results from Dysport within 2–3 days and Botox within 3–5 days, with both gradually reaching their optimal effect around the 2-week mark.

You may be a good candidate for Botox or Dysport if you’re looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and mild to moderate wrinkles, and you’re in overall good health with realistic expectations.
You are not a candidate if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or currently nursing. You should also avoid treatment if you have known allergies to neuromodulators, local anaesthetic ingredients, or
human albumin, or if you have a significant neurological or neuromuscular condition (such as multiple sclerosis). Additionally, Botox or Dysport should not be used if you are currently taking tetracycline or aminoglycoside antibiotics.
If you have allergy or sensitivity to cow’s milk or lidocaine, or a history of neurological conditions, please book a complimentary consultation to ensure that this is the right treatment for you.

A typical treatment lasts 3-4 months, depending on goals, individual factors such as metabolism, and dosage. There are no downsides if you decide to stop getting Botox, your muscles will gradually return to their natural movement, and lines may slowly return over time, but they won’t come back worse than before. For best long term results – consistency pays off. If you are looking to prevent line formation, consider 2-4 treatments a year. Questions? Our team is happy to provide you a complimentary in-person or virtual consultation to discuss if this is the right treatment for you.
